Lithium vs tubular batteries: which lasts longer in Nigeria?

The short answer

Lithium (LiFePO4) batteries cost about 2–2.5× more upfront than tubular, but last 6,000 cycles versus about 1,200, can be discharged to 90% instead of 50%, and need no maintenance. Over 10 years lithium is roughly 40% cheaper per kWh delivered.

Usable capacity is what matters

A 200Ah 12V tubular battery stores 2.4kWh, but you should only use half of it to protect its life. A 100Ah 25.6V lithium battery stores 2.56kWh and you can safely use 90% of that.

So one lithium module gives you roughly the same usable energy as two tubular batteries.

Cycle life and real cost

In Nigeria, most systems cycle once a day. Tubular batteries at 50% depth of discharge last around 3–4 years. LiFePO4 at 90% depth lasts 10 years or more.

Heat and maintenance

Tubular batteries need distilled water every three months and lose life fast above 35°C. Lithium modules have a battery management system that protects against over-charge and heat, and they're a quarter of the weight.

Frequently asked questions

Can I mix lithium and tubular batteries?

No. They charge at different voltages. Replace the whole bank when you switch.

Will my old inverter work with lithium?

Most inverters made after 2020 have a lithium or user-defined charging profile. Check with our engineers before you buy.
